**SPECIAL NOTE: This event is cancelled due to cloud coverage!! It is very unlikely to see any stars or meteors tonight** End 2020 with a Grand Astronomical Finale!! Hello meteor shower fanatics! I know this is the middle of December, but if you can brave the cold, the Geminid Meteor Shower will be the best this year. Predictions are between 60 to 120 meteors per hour, that is between one and two every minute. We will have no moonlight to contend with so come join us for an incredible night under the stars observing the Lord’s dazzling display of fireworks. WEATHER PERMITTING...cloudy it’s off. Please call to find out if were still on. 770-316-9200. WHY YONAH MT PARKING LOT? We need to get away from the lights of Atlanta. Our usual Brasstown Bald location is too far on a week night and that road closes due to ice. Yonah also has a toilet there and it's not too far away. OPEN EVENT: So bring your kids, neighbors or married friends. TIME: 8:30PM - 12AM (You may stay longer or arrive later) Peak is 2am. ADDRESS: 620 Chambers Rd, Cleveland, GA 30528 – This is the approximate address for the trailhead parking lot. Look for Echo signs! WHAT CAUSES THE GEMINIDS? Quote: Space.com "The Geminids are associated with the near-Earth object 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid that may have undergone a collision with another object in the distant past to produce the stream of particles that Earth runs into — creating the meteor shower." WHAT TO BRING: PREPARE!!! It will be VERY cold! Bring winter clothes, gloves, hat, scarf, longjohns, etc. We are allowed to lie on the ground in our sleeping bags. Best to lay on the ground so bring pads or extra blankets. If you don't have a cold temp sleeping bag, you can put one inside another or wrap in blankets. ***Don't forget snacks and soft drinks. CHAIRS: Bring only the ones that recline because you are looking straight up. Best to lay on the ground so bring pads or extra blankets. KEEP IN MIND: that there are always dangerous and unforeseen elements when out in nature: Cliffs, water hazards, weather, animals, insects, reptiles, falling limbs or rocks, Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac, etc. Trails may be un-maintained, slippery, icy, rocky and have steep embankments.
